Head Counselor: Sports & Fun Camps

Job Description
Join the Westport Continuing Education (WCE) team this summer and work with kids to foster great summer camp memories, team building and lifelong skills that promote wellness and physical fitness! WCE seeks a motivated and dedicated Head Counselor for a sports and fitness day camp for students in grades 1-5 at Bedford Middle School in Westport, CT. The ideal candidate has prior experience supervising and teaching children and serves as a role model, building positive relationships and promoting a safe environment for campers to learn and thrive in a fun camp experience. With direction from the WCE director, the Head Counselor develops and leads instruction in a daily schedule of activities that promote group and individual skill-building in physical activity, exercise, games/recreation, health, wellness and teamwork. He/she supervises and schedules additional staff based on camp enrollment. The Head Counselor fosters positive relationships with staff and students and maintains communication with the WCE director, staff, campers and camp families on a daily and weekly basis. The summer camp environment allows the Head Counselor the flexibility to be innovative and creative, adapting games and activities to meet student objectives. 

Schedule
Hours are 8:15am - 2:45pm; Monday through Friday from June 22 - July 31 (except July 3). 

Responsibilities
  • Assists with the development and implementation of daily/weekly activities for students in grades 1-5 that promote physical activity, games/recreation, health, wellness and teamwork.
  • Supervises camp with attention to behavior and group management, health and safety, security and skill development.
  • Supervises and schedules assistant counselors and junior counselors.
  • Maintains a positive, caring demeanor and demonstrates enthusiasm, actively participating in all activities with campers and staff throughout the day.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication; using clear, concise and professional language when interacting with campers, camp families and staff.
  • Ensures that facilities, storage areas and equipment are well-maintained, organized, and used safely.
  • Follows WCE policies and procedures, and notifies supervisor of any issues or concerns as it relates to schedule, facility, equipment or behaviors that need to be addressed.
Qualifications
  • Must have completed at least 2 years of college or work equivalent experience. 
  • Preferred candidate has a background or experience in sports education or relevant field.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated commitment to working with elementary and middle school children.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring staff and counselors.
  • Prior camp experience preferred.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to plan and schedule.
  • Knowledge of sport specific rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.

Compensation
$35/hour
