North Haven Middle School
2019-2020 school year
The Intensive Learning Services (ILS) teacher will develop and implement an effective educational program for the
students assigned to the program. The ILS teacher will work collaboratively with all members of the student’s
school team.
1. Connecticut certification in special education
2. Autism Certification, degree or extensive formal coursework in autism and/or students with significant
cognitive and/or behavioral challenges
3. Master’s degree in Special Education (or commensurate credits)
4. Previous experience working with students with significant cognitive and behavioral disabilities,
5. Develop holistic, comprehensive programs for students with significant cognitive and/or behavioral
6. Implement, model, monitor, and adjust a variety of instructional and social/emotional strategies across all
settings – restrictive settings, regular classroom settings, and non-instructional settings, in cooperation with
general education classroom staff
7. Certification in appropriate de-escalation and physical restraint techniques
8. Research and implement current technology applications
9. Universally collect and respond to quantitative and qualitative student data
10. Operationalize an understanding of activities of daily living between home and school
This teacher will be case manager for identified students, with responsibilities for the development and coordination
of individualized academic, behavioral and social programming. This professional will assist classroom teachers and
paraprofessionals with instructional strategies to facilitate meaningful inclusion, including collaboration and
consultation in weekly team meetings. This teacher will understand and implement empirically supported behavioral
interventions and develop a daily/weekly schedule of instructional and non-instructional activities for each
paraprofessional that supports students in this program.
Data are critical to the support of this program therefore this person will collect and interpret data and utilize it to
modify instruction, content, and to report progress on student ability. This teacher will summarize assessment results
and incorporate this information, along with input from other staff members and administrators, into evaluation
reports, also using this information to develop/modify an appropriate IEP. Additionally, this person will conduct
appropriate evaluations and assist other teams in understanding the special education eligibility process for students
suspected of having autism.
As imperative members of the team, this person will coordinate and facilitate regular parent meetings, along with
maintaining constant and on-going communication with parents and team members regarding students and all facets
of the program. This teacher will solicit community participation and volunteerism to support the program and
individual students in working towards community independence.
