STEP/SALARY: MA – PHD / $132,120.00- $165,598.00*

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of the district wide curriculum in athletics, health, and physical education programs, in accordance with all applicable state and national standards.
- Participate in the planning and organization of intervention programs in health and physical education, based on district assessments of student physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development needs.
- Administer, schedule, and coordinate the district sports teams’ athletic activities and events, including transportation, in conformance with knowledge and understanding of all rules and regulations of the governing authority for interscholastic athletics and within the limits of the established budget. **
- Ensure the proper supervision of students participating in interscholastic activities. **
- Uphold and promote the standards set forth by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) to all district staff, students, parents, and guardians.
- Establish connections and collaborate with all interschool athletic divisions in the area pertaining to student-athletes eligibility based on academics, health, and safety standards.
- Implement and monitor district procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations as well as league policies.
- Ensure a safe and healthy environment for all athletic activities, events, and physical education programs and develop risk management strategies to reduce and prevent injuries. **
- Plan, schedule and participate in community outreach events to strengthen home-school connections to inform students, guardians and community about the district’s athletics, health, and physical education programs.
- Provide support and technical assistance to principals and school staff through routine visits, regularly scheduled meetings, and responses to requests for assistance.
- In providing support at the school level, develop and foster a culture of collaborative and reflective practice.
- Participate in the hiring of a qualified and coaching officials. **
- Supervise coaching and physical education staff.
- Coordinate with coaches on team travel, game scheduling and practice sessions.
- Ensure that each athletic coach holds a coaching permit issued by the state board. **
- Evaluate coaches on an annual basis and provide copies of evaluation. **
- Oversee middle school sports coordinators and middle school sports programs.
- Help identify staff training needs and coordinate planning of professional development opportunities under the direction of the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, or their designee.
- Address personnel issues in a timely and confidential manner in accordance with district policies and procedures as well as union contracts.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Connecticut certification as an intermediate supervisor (092).
- Connecticut certification in health and physical education (044) preferred.
- Certificate issued by the State Board of Education and coaching permit issued by the state board.
- Master’s degree in health or physical education or related field.
- Ability to effectively implement and manage budgets.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and research in health and physical education.
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with teachers, administrators, parents, community groups and local youth athletic organizations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology for communication and delivery of instruction.
- A minimum of five years of experience in physical education teaching or coaching preferred.
- A minimum of two years of experience in athletic administration.
- Ability to develop and implement athletic programs.
- Effective leadership, communication, and team management skills.
- Excellent knowledge of athletic laws and regulations.
- Strong negotiation and public relationship skills.
- Valid Connecticut Driver’s license.
