.5 English Learner (EL) Specialist, District-wide (Tuesday, Wednesday, and half-day Thursday)
 
POSITION DESCRIPTION 
The English Learner (EL) Specialist will support the implementation of the district's research-based programs in classrooms and the school environment.  The EL Specialist will be highly skilled in all academic content areas, with a focus on all elements of English Language Arts. Expertise is required in the Common Core Standards, word study and vocabulary development needed to bridge the gap for students receiving direct instruction within or outside of the general education classroom.  The EL Specialist will support the professional growth of all teachers specifically in providing classroom strategies for ELs, Sheltered Instruction, and the use of intervention to increase the district's capacity to meet the needs of all learners. The EL Specialist will provide job-embedded professional development and assist teachers, Instructional Specialists, and Intervention Specialists in the collection and analysis of student assessment data. The EL Specialist must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum and be adept at implementing best practices in teaching and learning with differentiation in mind.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide direct instruction to students identified as requiring English Language support using a research-based program;
  • Assess and monitor the progress of students for eligibility, exit, and continuing EL services using Language Assessment Scales (LAS-Links);
  • Collaborate with district staff and EdAdvance to complete, submit and track the Title III Grant and the Title III Annual Evaluation Report;
  • Inform parents of eligibility status using State-required forms;
  • Provide school-based instructional support across grade levels in curriculum differentiation and implementation, in professional development workshops, shared teaching opportunities, classroom modeling, and observations of lessons with teacher reflection;
  • Work with SRBI team to plan targeted academic goals for students receiving EL support and intervention;
  • Deliver highly-focused supplemental teaching using a research-based program for students receiving EL instruction;
  • Analyze assessment data with classroom teachers to determine the need for continued intervention, additional intervention, or to change intervention strategy;   
  • Assist in and model for teachers the creation of classroom environments that support differentiated instruction for EL;
  • Coach teachers on the effective use of student work, running records, and assessment data to inform differentiated instruction;
  • Update teachers on emerging and best practices in EL instruction with a primary focus on English Language Arts;

The position is funded through the general budget. EL services are provided to students attending Hinsdale and Pearson. The schedule at each school will vary depending upon student enrollment in each school.
 
EDUCATION
Bachelor's and/or Master’s Degree
TESOL Certification.
 
EVALUATION
Evaluation shall be performed by the building Principal
  
WORKING CONDITIONS: Per contract with Winchester Education Association
Salary Range - $43,277.00 - $91,696.00
