District Translator/Interpreter Job Description


Job Title: District Translator/Interpreter

Reports to: Coordinator of World Language, Dual Language & ESOL

Department/School: Campuses as assigned


Primary Purpose: Provide effective communication between the school, the District and the student’s family. Provide oral and written communication from family’s primary language/English and viceversa for various meetings, documents, and activities.


Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School Diploma Bachelor’s degree preferred Rating of Advanced Mid or Higher on ACTFL OPI or OPIc (Oral Proficiency Interview) and WPT (Writing Proficiency Test)


Job Requirements:
 
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  •  Mastery of required source language to targeted second language to that of native speaker
  •  Correct language usage and pronunciation, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Accurate translation of written documents
  • Strong interpersonal and language skills
  •  Operation of standard office equipment
  • Usage of pertinent software applications
  •  Preparation and maintenance of accurate records


Special Knowledge/Skills
 
  • Ability to fluently read, write, and speak in English and second language
  •  Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  •  Proficiency in Google applications (Google documents, Google spreadsheet, etc.)
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Must be detailed oriented, self-motivated and able to multi-task
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English and one or more of the following: Spanish, Polish, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese, Haitian Creole
  • Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district personnel
  •  Ability to work collaboratively with others


Experience: 
 
  • Preferred translation and interpretation experience Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  •  Translate both written and verbal communication from English student and family’s primary language.
  •  Provide interpretations as required by phone conferences or in person
  •  Translate district-wide letters and documents
  •  Proofread other translations and provide feedback
  •  Serve as interpreter for meetings as requested
  • Serve as a liaison between school and community


Essential Functions: 

 
  • Answers questions and interprets and/or translates appropriately and with correct pronunciation from source language to target language (e.g., English to Spanish) with speed and accuracy for both internal and external parties such as staff, parents, students, and/or public agencies for the purpose of providing information and/or routing inquiries
  • Attends a wide variety of meetings, for the purpose of serving as an interpreter of conversations (e.g., Spanish/English)
  • Converts a variety of written materials from one language to another with speed and accuracy for the purpose of providing documents from/to second language for use in the classroom and/or for communication with student family members and the non-English speaking community members
  • Translates a wide variety of documents verbatim and idiomatic materials and conversations from the source language to the target language e.g., special education IEP meetings and resulting correspondence and reports, forms, handbooks, curriculum and testing materials, legal and medical documents, department forms, e-mail, literary books, state reports) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy of information
  •  Verifies translations made by others for the purpose of reviewing and editing materials for accuracy, context, readability, grammar and style

Rate: $30.90/ hour
