Job Description:
Silas Deane Middle School is seeking a motivated and dedicated professional to serve as our Principal.  The position is vital to our school as this leader has regular and influential interaction with all students, staff, parents/families, community members, and our District’s administrative team.   We are targeting filling this role by February 2019.  [Note: The District will remain open to candidates who may only be interested in, and available for, a July 1, 2019 transition.  For such candidates, this MUST be noted in one’s cover letter expressing interest in the role.  Otherwise, all candidates will be considered for a February 2019 hire as is strongly preferred and desired by the District.]

Compensation: $120,251 – $146,137 full-time annually

The Silas Deane Middle School Principal will partner closely with school/District administrative teams and school-based leaders to prepare every student for social, emotional and academic success, and will serve a critical role in implementing the school and district vision of learning. 

- Guide and implement a community-wide vision of learning through the implementation of School Improvement Plans aligned to the District Strategic Plan;
- Drive student success by monitoring and continuously improving teaching/learning within the building, ensuring alignment with district, state and national standards of excellence;
- Lead the recruitment, selection, supervision and evaluation of certified and non-certified staff members, ensuring a highly effective learning environment is at the core of all staffing activities and decisions;
- Create and sustain a school culture committed to strong values, beliefs and practices that are aligned with Wethersfield’s mission and vision;
- Provide leadership and oversight of various school teams to support instruction, assessment, professional development, and support programs;
- Continuously communicate and be available to parents, families and the community;
- Provide leadership for the organization, supervision and operation of Silas Deane Middle School and in the implementation of all Board of Education policies;
- Promote a positive approach to school wide student expectations and behavior management and implement a multi-tiered system of support;
- Lead the creation and delivery of professional development activities aligned to school goals and student achievement;
- Develop and manage a building based budget aligned to school/District goals;
- Work with all staff to ensure a safe school climate and oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of school safety procedures aligned to local and state requirements;
- Hold high expectations of themself and staff to ensure educational professionalism, ethics, integrity, justice, and fairness.

- Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills to lead staff, students, families and members of the school community;
- Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation and implementation of curriculum and instruction;
- Demonstrated success in the areas of team engagement, fostering improved school climate, enhancing student assessment;
- Demonstrated ability to use technology for data analysis and understand its application to student learning;
- Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience;  
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior administrator experience;
- Holds Connecticut Professional Educator Certification – Intermediate Administration & Supervision (092);
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Demonstrated experience in managing school improvement efforts and supervising staff;
- Demonstrated ability to handle and treat information confidentially;    
- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with staff, parents, students and the public;
- Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, with a sense of urgency, and with accuracy;
- Possesses a heart for respectfully challenging the status quo, advocating for change, and leading efforts for process improvement;
