Chapel Haven – Schleifer Center is located in the Westville area of New Haven, CT and employs 150 employees who work diligently to fulfill our mission of achieving independence for our clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Chapel Haven Schleifer Center has recently opened a new, state-of-the-art residential complex, which is the first of several phases in its campus expansion. We are nationally accredited by CARF, state-approved by the Connecticut State Department of Education, and licensed by the CT Department of Developmental Services.

We are currently looking to fill a full-time (30 hrs./ wk.) position for a Program Assistant within our REACH Program.  The following description and requirements are as follows:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Program Assistant assists the Teachers with preparation for classes and provides instructional support to students in the classroom, apartment and community settings (e.g. worksites, etc.).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION
  • Assist in the preparation of teaching materials, equipment, projects, and displays, as directed by teacher(s).
  • The Program Assistant must be self-motivated, team-oriented, and committed to teaching every individual through creative, innovative and meaningful instruction.
  • Maintain a cooperative attitude of working together with the teacher(s), volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing educational strategies and activities.
  • Assist the Director of Admissions with Weekly Visitor Evaluations.
  • Supervise classroom and community worksites in the absence of t the teacher.
  • Provide one-to-one assistance to students in the classroom, apartment, and community settings.
  • Assist with hygiene, meal preparation, community safety, grocery shopping and budgeting.
  • Ability to create visual supports necessary for individuals to be independent.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Become familiar with the REACH program curriculum, written lesion plans, daily/weekly schedules, methods for recording attendance, all other daily duties of the REACH Program staff.
  • Perform other duties related to educational programming as assigned by Special Education Teachers, REACH Administrative Manager, REACH Program Director, and Director of Education.
  • Attend all required meetings, including but not limited to: departmental and agency staff.
  • Attends all training and professional development opportunities as required by and/or provided by Chapel Haven Schleifer Center.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide transportation of residents/students as needed. Use of own vehicle may be required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Previous experience working with adults with cognitive disabilities and/or special needs.
  • Ability to take direction and work within a teaching team.
  • Ability to affect and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, staff and the general public.
  • Cultural sensitivity and proven ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral and written skill. Computer literacy.
  • Can work independently and as a team member.
  • Able to adapt to flexible nature of the position.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Maintain a positive work attitude.
  • Excellent effective judgement, decision-making and communication skills.
  • Obtain/maintain in-service requirements as mandated be DDS and Chapel Haven Schleifer Center
  • Valid CT driver’s license
  • Ability to stand, sit and walk for periods of time.
  • Ability to obtain PSL
  • Experience with Department of Developmental Services (DDS)

Ability to climb stairs as needed

This position is defined as hourly, non-exempt by the FLSA
