Science Department Head


The Department Head reports directly to the Principal.  The position is effective for the 2016-2017 school year and will continue in accordance with terms outlined in the Stratford Administrators’ Association (SAA) contract.  The filling of this position is contingent upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.
  • Demonstrates leadership in all aspects of the department.
  • Coordinates or serves on district curriculum committees.
  • Participates in the development and articulation of the science curriculum.
  • Coordinates the implementation of the high school science curriculum.
  • Participates in the interview process for teaching candidates at the discretion of the Principal.
  • Identifies staff development needs within the department.
  • Plans lessons and instructs students in two (2) science classes.
  • Assists in preparing an annual budget for the department.
  • Coordinates the student selection of courses within the department.
  • Maintains an inventory of department supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with the supervision and evaluation of department staff.
  • Responsibilities also extend to the feeder middle school.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Also support the science department at Wooster Middle School.
  • Connecticut Educator Certificate, (105) or (092) as well as current state teaching certification (030, 031, 032). Cross-endorsements on Science preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of science methodology and teaching techniques
  • Master’s Degree in secondary education in addition to graduate study in the sciences field, or a Master’s Degree in science with graduate work in secondary education
  • Successful teaching experience on the secondary school level
  • The ability to work cooperatively with staff and to exercise leadership in the supervision of staff and the development of curriculum
  • The ability to organize the department so that the needs of pupils and teaching of subject matter will be interwoven in the most effective manner
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity
  • Strong work ethic
196 days per year, as described in the Stratford Administrators’ Association contract 
The salary for this position is determined in accordance with the provisions of the current administrator contract.
