Job Description:

The Art Teacher is responsible for the continuum of art and instruction for The Charles F. Hayden School. The Art Teacher functions as part of the multidisciplinary team of professionals as a teacher.  The Art Teacher is responsible for providing specialized art class instruction in accordance with The Charles F. Hayden School thematic curriculum.  This position requires intensive interdisciplinary collaboration.  The Art Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating the special education and psycho-educational needs and abilities as these apply to art instruction.

  • Plans and implements engaging instructional experiences to promote students’ exploration of ideas and acquisition of the necessary knowledge and skills to explore art in compliance with IEP and curricular standards.
  • Develops and implements within the student fundamental critical thinking and problem solving techniques utilizing specific art curriculum/materials which addresses individual students’ IEP goals and learning styles.
  • Conducts weekly individual art sessions with day school students as assigned in an effort to assist student in formulation of value system, coping skills and positive personal goals.
  • Conducts open studio program for both elementary and middle school students in order to allow students to further develop their own individual creative process.
  • Promotes open communication, discussion and collaboration with staff regarding student social and academic progress.
  • Initiates special projects and events integrating art as a vital modality in school and community.
  • Maintains educational data on each child, including lesson plans, testing data and progress reports.
  • Maintains clinical data and reports for all students. Attends all team meetings, supervision (Clinical Supervisor and/or School Principal), teacher rounds and relevant training/seminars in an effort to exercise and promote the highest level of professional development and judgment.
  • Implements the Boys Town Model as designed for the Boys & Girls Village Program.
  • Engages in Professional Development Plan planning as outlined in The Charles F. Hayden School Professional Development Plan.
  • Prepares all reports and documents related to role responsibilities in accordance with quality guidelines and due date postings.

  • Maintains safety for all Charles F. Hayden School students throughout the school day at all times.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the principal to serve The Charles F. Hayden School needs.
  • Masters Degree in Art Education and Connecticut Teacher Certification in Art Education is required.
  • Must fulfill competency based training requirements in TCI and Boys & Girls Village Social Skills Model.
  • Must be able to respond to crisis, including the ability to physically restrain if necessary.
  • Must be willing to participate in after school hours The Charles F. Hayden School art related events or duties.
