Job Description: 
Our school community nurtures and inspires all students on their journeys to become creative, empathetic and holistic problem solvers who find joy in tackling authentic challenges as they build a better world. The New Canaan Public School’s Innovation program incorporates a hands-on, problem-solving approach that unlocks students’ creativity and fosters critical thinking by leveraging STEM and real-world experiences.   Students gain core competency in design thinking and computational thinking and have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of innovation and computer science through hands-on experience with programming, algorithms, systems thinking, and real-world problem-solving

The Saxe STEM/Computer Science Teacher responsibilities include both direct instruction and collaborating with  students as they learn new skills for developing ideas, experiencing success and failure, and making things. They will also provide inspiration and support for faculty in developing and implementing new innovative learning opportunities. This is for a teacher who wants to play with education in the most hands-on and creative manner.



Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement an engaging curriculum for students in grades 5-8 that includes: computer science, digital literacy, design thinking, problem solving, and engineering.
  • Update the community regarding Innovation project topics, process, and final products via school communication systems regularly.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to meaningfully incorporate Design Thinking and Project Based Learning into their classes. 
  • Support teachers through individual coaching, small-group workshops, and large-group professional learning sessions to build capacity in using educational technology and design thinking practices.
  • Plan and implement outreach activities throughout the year that include student demonstrations of work and presentations of that work to the community.
  • Create a learning environment that is innovative and inspiring.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Collaborate with the Directors of Digital Learning and Innovation on learning software recommendations, best practices in classrooms, and researching new technologies to incorporate into the curriculum.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrable willingness to use diverse materials to create like wood, cardboard, styrofoam, Arduinos, metal, 3D Printer, Laser Engraver, etc. 
  • Design scaffolded learning experiences that introduce students to key computer science concepts, including block-based and text-based programming, data analysis, and user-centered application development.
  • Experience in programming languages such as Tynker, Python, C++, Javascript, HTML, block coding, Autodesk Inventor, MIT App Inventor.
Qualifications:
  • Relevant Connecticut teaching certificate to be able to span grades 5-8 in a school 
(A variety of certifications are applicable such as but not limited to 4-12 certification and 092-administrator or K-6 certification and 092-administrator or 4-8 certification, or 047- CTE) 
  • Familiarity with national and state standards including  information and technology literacy, including the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and CT Computer Science Standards.
