TEACHER - READING/WRITING IMPROVEMENT
NATHAN HALE MIDDLE SCHOOL
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Reading/Writing Improvement Teacher is highly skilled in supporting at-risk students who are experiencing reading and writing difficulties. This position requires a teacher who is a continual learner and has knowledge of and demonstrated success in teaching reading and writing as well as in providing tiered instruction to struggling students. The Reading/Writing Improvement Teacher will also be responsible for coaching classroom teachers in reading/writing systems, strategies and procedures and in effectively implementing the identified SRBI interventions for students in Tiers One and Two. The design of this hybrid teaching/coaching role allows for the provision of direct instruction to students for the majority of the school day (70%) and time to provide peer coaching and professional development to colleagues (30%) of the school day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides direct instruction to students identified as needing Tier One or Tier Two SRBI interventions
Note: The Superintendent will be reviewing effectiveness in this position on an annual basis in accordance with the standards set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Days: Monday – Friday
Salary: Per NFT Agreement

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides direct instruction to students identified as needing Tier One or Tier Two SRBI interventions
- Implements research-based interventions with targeted students
- Identifies and addresses the specific reading needs of targeted students through the administration of screening and diagnostic assessments
- Understands and focuses on all five pillars of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension)
- Applies knowledge of different learning styles to customize lessons for students
- Conducts progress monitoring assessments and strategies during the course of instruction
- Builds strong relationships with classroom teachers
- Assists teachers in the collection and analysis of progress monitoring data for targeted students
- Peer coaches’ other teachers to use the research-based programs, strategies and varied resources through modeling, co-teaching, observing and providing feedback, as assigned
- Assists teachers with planning and pacing of lessons, the development of differentiated lessons and the selection of best practices and strategies to best meet the needs of their students
- Provides technical support to teacher teams, as needed
- Create an articulated schedule with building administrator in consultation with the CAO
- Demonstrates expertise in providing research- based interventions through virtual learning environments
- Provides regular reports and feedback to parents of identified students
- Maintains logs and student records, as appropriate
- Collaborates with CAO, Curriculum Directors and/or Building Administrator to plan professional learning sessions
- Highly effective communicator
- Exemplary record of teaching and improving students’ reading and writing proficiencies
- Strong knowledge of research- based programs and practices
- Collaborates well with other teachers, administrators and parents
- Uses Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom
- Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts, Grades 1-12 (#102) Cross Endorsement Required
- Master’s Degree required
- A minimum of five years of exemplary teaching at a minimum of two different grade levels
- Strong presentation, facilitation, organization and planning skills
- Knowledge of Adult Learning Theory preferred
- Prior successful experience as a Reading teacher preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate
- Ability to speak Spanish preferred
