INSTRUCTIONAL PARAEDUCATOR
Qualifications: 
  • High school diploma
  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education, earned an Associate’s Degree, or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment
  • Prior experience preferred
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Reports to:   Assistant Director of Pupil Services or Building Administrator
Job Goal:
  • To assist the teacher achieve instructional objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help students achieve skill levels set in their IEPs.
  • To help students with the support they need to gain maximum benefit from the district’s special education program

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Assists the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them toward individual goals and objectives.
  • Under supervision of the special education teacher, works with a small group of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Accompanies the student(s) to the office or the school nurse as necessary.
  • Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
  • Serves as resource person, if and when requested, by the student evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
  • Assists teachers with clerical duties as needed.
  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers and other material for instruction.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists with such large group activities as drill work, preteaching, reading aloud, reteaching and review.
  • Assists students in the library, media or writing center.
  • Alerts teacher to any problem or special information about a student.
  • Serves as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the special education teacher.
  • Maintains the same level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Participates in inservice training program as assigned
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities of  the Special Education Paraeducator as the Director of Pupil Services may assign from time to time.

Terms of Employment:  
As established by the contract between Weston Board of Education and Local 1303-110 of Council #4  American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO.  
Evaluation:  
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education’s policy.
