Job Description
Vocational Transition Specialist
Job Summary:
Transition services means a coordinated set of activities for a student, designed within an outcome-oriented process, which promotes movement from school to post-school activities, includes post secondary education, vocational training, integrated employment, continuing and adult education, adult services, independent living or community participation.  This position would primarily be addressing those students with significant disabilities who would not be pursuing post secondary education.  The specialist would assist all transitioning students through the state “Building a Bridge” program.

Reports to:  Director of Pupil Services
Job Tasks:
  • Work Development Services - designed to prepare an individual for the skills needed for employment.
  • Vocational skills assessment - assess a student’s potential for competitive employment and to determine the skills and future training necessary to prepare the student for the world of work.
  • Provide or facilitate job training and job coaching for students in order to assist them in gaining competitive employment.
  • Work with outside agencies (BRS, DDS, DMH, Kennedy Center, Ability beyond Disability) to develop job sites and independent living skills as well as assisting in the transitioning of student’s to these agencies when they reach age 22.
  • Further developing the community independence and living skills program to meet the IDEA requirements in these areas.  These areas include: banking, budgeting, shopping, recreation, social skills, mobility, self-care, communication, etc.
  • Develop awareness of area programs for transitioning students and the possibilities of referrals to those programs.
  • Meet with families on a regular basis to assist them with understanding the components of transition.  (age 18 - student rights, how to work with what agencies, post secondary living planning, etc.)
