SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER - Small Class Size
Intensive Education Academy Inc. is seeking a Special Education Teacher. The teacher will provide instruction to students based on the student IEP's needs and assist in the development and implementation of behavioral and instructional strategies as determined by the student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). The Teacher will create a classroom environment that encourages productive learning and fosters positive behaviors and independence. The Teacher must have the ability to sensitively relate to children, staff, and parents in an educational environment. The teacher must have strength in teaching reading and strong classroom management. This is an academic year position with possible opportunities to work in our Extended School Year program over the summer. This position reports directly to the Director of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIREMENTS
  • Promotes student engagement, independence, and interdependence in learning and facilitates a positive learning community.
  • Builds relationships with students and provides emotional support and crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Develop daily and alternate lesson plans.
  • Documents academic, behavioral, and social/emotional areas of student performance through data collection.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of FBAs and BIPs.
  • Drafts and implements IEP goals and objectives.
  • Assesses student learning, provides feedback to students, and adjusts instruction.
  • Plans assessment strategies to document specific evidence of student learning.
  • Serves as a case manager and attends P.P.T. meetings, I.E.P. reviews, and parent/teacher open houses and conferences.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and other co-workers daily to support a productive, creative, and positive work environment.
  • Co-teaches, consults, and collaborates with Specials Subject Teachers (Art, Music, PE) and Related Service personnel to provide expertise in understanding student needs, IEPs, BIP’s, Modifications, and Accommodations.
  • Maximizes instructional time by effectively managing routines and transitions.
  • Participates in school-wide events.
  • Meets the professional Common Core of Teaching for the State of Connecticut and the CT Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers.
  • Is responsible for teaching and non-teaching duties as assigned by Administration.
Certification Requirements:
  • CT State Teacher Certification in Special Education  (065, 165, 265)
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements:
Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.  A Master’s degree in Special Education is preferred.
Strong behavior management skills and experience are required. Knowledge or experience working with children with diverse educational, social, and emotional needs is a plus. Candidates must have a positive attitude, good communication skills, demonstrate good judgment, and the ability to establish effective rapport with students, families, and all colleagues. The ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse ethnic, economic, educational, and religious backgrounds is a requisite, as is a commitment to exceeding standards of professional & ethical practices and responsibilities.
