STONINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Position: Before/After School Childcare Counselor
FLSA: Non-Exempt/Hourly
Approval Date: January 25, 2023
Reports to: Extended Learning Director
         
Terms of Service: 
  • Part-time with morning and/or afternoon hours of 7:00-8:30 AM or 3:30-5:30/6 PM. 
  • Maximum 29 hours per week 
  • No benefits available for part-time employees
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Work Environment: May be required to work in various temperatures and locations within the facility and outside. Must be able to work under stressful situations. 
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Extended Learning Director, the Before/After School Childcare Counselor will be responsible for helping to maintain a safe and clean site, delivering a high level of program quality, and working cooperatively with staff, students, and families. 
Ability to - 
  • Work with, develop, lead, mentor, and supervise youth ages 5 to 14 in small and large groups. 
  • Engage in physical activities with participants without limitation. 
  • Lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects between 10 and 20 pounds. 
  • Stand for up to 5 hours. 
  • Maintain an inviting, safe, and orderly environment. 
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, parents, and students. 
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate sensitivity with others. 
  • Be a good role model for children. 
Education and/or Experience: 
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Entry level position. 
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
Note: It is impractical to list every duty and responsibility of a Before/After School Director as both the conditions and the human variables involved are both unpredictable and subject to change.  These, then, are the major duties and responsibilities of the position, but there are many additional specific tasks and processes required to fulfill this role in a satisfactory manner.
  1. Conduct student check-in/out and resolve all attendance discrepancies with expediency. 
  2. Provide a warm and caring atmosphere for participants. 
  3. Maintain open communication between program, school, and community partner personnel. 
  4. Communicate with parents through daily drop-off and pick-up. 
  5. Monitor the safety and security of students, ensuring that all safety policies are followed and enforced. 
  6. Complete incident reports as necessary and ensure timely communication of the same with parents. 
  7. Provide students with assistance in completing homework assignments/projects. 
  8. Ensure that materials are well-managed, and that school property is maintained in an orderly fashion. 
  9. Assist the Extended Learning Director with development and planning of activities that incorporate program goals into the daily routine. 
  10. Organize, prepare materials, and lead daily activities. 
  11. Work effectively with students in out of school activities and assist with behavior management, discipline, and interpersonal actions. 
  12. Maintain a safe environment for all participants. 
  13. Attend staff meetings. 
  14. Report any problems that arise with participants, other employees, or the school to the Extended Learning Director. 
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Extended Learning.
